Insurance Regulatory Authority (IRA) now says insurance companies will cover people affected by coronavirus, hours after it had announced that it will not.
The first case was reported in Kenya on March 13 and it is expected that more infections will be reported in the coming days.
Coronavirus, also known as Covid-19, was declared a pandemic by the World Health Organisation (WHO) on March 11
The u-turn by insurers was announced by IRA. “The public is hereby assured that the insurance companies will continue to provide their services to policy holders affected or infected with the virus,” said IRA.
Members of the Association of Kenya Insuerers (AKI) had earlier said the classification of coronavirus as a pandemic meant that it was excluded from coverage.
The announcement had caused public anxiety as many took to social media to criticize IRA and AKI for the earlier decision.
