The National Assembly has today passed the BBI 235 to 83 bill in what many described as a win for its promoters President Uhuru Kenyatta and former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.
In the same vein, the passage of the Bill was seen by some political analysts as a loss for Deputy President William Samoei Ruto. Dr Ruto has never led the No campaign, though his allies have been consistent in opposing the ‘handshake bill’.
On Thursday, the MPs who voted for the Constitution of Kenya (Amendment) Bill, 2020 said resource allocation, inclusivity and more funds to counties was a major plus for their constituents. Two MPs abstained from the vote.
Notable No-voters include vocal Garissa Township’s Aden Duale, Mathira’s Rigathi Gachagua, Malindi’s Aisha Jumwa and Kimani Ichungwa of Kikuyu.
While voting against BBI, Uasin Gishu woman representative Gladys Shollei said it is a two-man initiative disguised as a popular initiative.
