Telkom Kenya says it does not owe Sh906.6 million claim from Safaricom.
The market leader Safaricom last month wrote to the regulator demanding that Telkom Kenya pays up before the Communications Authority (CA) allows it merge with Airtel.
But Telkom Kenya last week argued that Safaricom had “inflated” the debt, saying that its planned merger will not hamper its ability to settle the bill. Telkom did not give a counter figure only saying it will call for dialogue.
“The amounts being reconciled by our teams are less than the figures quoted by Safaricom in the media; Safaricom figures are incorrect and we will be engaging with them,” Telkom Kenya said
There are fears that negotiations on the level of indebtness by Telkom Kenya to Safaricom may indefinitely delay the merger which pundits hoped would strengthen the current weak competition against Safaricom PLC.
Safaricom declined to be pulled into the new row only saying it expects the regulator, Communications Authority of Kenya to respond to its’ concerns.
